Theo Jansen – Kinetic Sculpture
Theo Jansen is an artist and kinetic sculptor living and working in Holland. He builds large works which resemble skeletons of animals which are able to walk using the wind on the beaches of the Netherlands. His animated works are a fusion of art and engineering. In the current BMW commercial Jansen says “The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds”.
Since about ten years Theo Jansen is occupied with the making of a new nature. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic matierial of this new nature. He makes skeletons which are able to walk on the wind. Eventualy he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they will live their own lives.

Those are amazing. I want to try and get him to come talk at U of M. We have this visiting artist/lecture series that we do, it would be so cool to see his work in person. Thanks Chonk!
I watched that BMW commercial and all I can say is that it’s amazing. I didn’t know that the kinetic sculpture featured in that commercial is for real.
Wow.. THAT IS AMAZING! Can you IMAGINE building or even designing one of those?? Incredible. The mind is a wonderful thing! What a clever man.. it´s like something you see in the movies!!
Lena
I have to say that they’re amazing…
Would love to see those walking along the beach…
I wonder they go in a straight line?
Agree with these guys, the robots are great and I guess they are original, since I don’t know of another person doing same thing.
that’s awesome man! good job!
Wow, that is an amazing art and craft design and indeed a fusion of art and engineering. Theo Jansen is a genius… I wish I can see his engineered arts in person.
Mr. Jansen has an outstanding imagination. He observes things in different ways. His mind sees and understands things that many of us cannot perceive. I really like to see his works personally. But for now, I’ll content myself with the video you provided. Thank you for sharing.
Wow! This guy is amazing, I’ve never seen anything like that before!
I watched the video and boy, I want to meet Theo Jansen in person. His kinetic sculpture is magnificent and I can’t imagine how fun it is for me to see these awesome kinetic sculptures floating on the beach.
I didn’t remember but I have seen similar sculpture in an movie and that was beyond my imagination. I am wondering to see it in real. That is awesome.
Wow that was beautiful, what a great life he leads. The business logo at the end kind of ruined it for me, but great marketing. Is it real or cgi?
Oh god I would be beyond scared if I saw one of those things coming down the beach at me. That is a very creative way to make art I will say.
This is simply phenomenal! And priceless in my opinion!
Amazing! I can’t believe that this ‘creature’ is real until I watched the video. I thought this kind of thing is just an animation. I hope I can visit Mr. Jansen’s place to see all his sculptures.
Wow! What can I say, I’m speechless! I don’t know how to describe this great sculptor of Jansen, really great combo of engineering and art. This should be thought to students, hope I could be his student.
This is the first time I’ve seen this, and it is amazing. If I didn’t know that it engineered i would conclude that it is a miracle. Mr. Jansen is a genius in combining the art and engineering, he’s creation is a sight to behold.
Wow, I have lost way too much by not found out your blog earlier:) I didn’t even knew that such things exists.
Those are really inspirational. On the wiki site about him you also have a lot of useful links with amazing photos. Some of his work is dull, some beautiful and some even somewhat frightening.. but i think this was his purpose.
What a visionary…that is really impressive when it starts “walking”.
That is super cool, I’m simply amazed. Thanks for sharing this, I appreciate it!
Hi, Great blog. Will definitely comeback for more.
Nice blog!! Theo Jansen pretends to study the progress of mobility and sculpting of the air which surrounds us and giving it life, dimension and form, surpassing the frontiers of what we know and feel…
